UPPCO plans land sale near hydro plants

Upper Peninsula Power Company (UPPCO) plans to sell non-project land at five hydro power schemes involving six reservoirs in Michigan under its draft Shoreline Management Plans.

The company has extended the deadline for comments on the plans by a month to 21 May. Draft plans for the schemes have been issued and public presentations scheduled for early April.

UPPCO proposes to sell some non-project use lands related to five hydro plants - Bond falls, Cataract, Escanaba, Au Train and Prickett. The company aims to use the funds to benefit shareholders, ratepayers and ensure new economic uses of the lands in ways consistent with its licence conditions.

UPPCO said the draft plans were developed using data from environmental studies and feedback from the public and focus groups plus government agencies.

Health officials keep close eye on blastomycosis cases

Public health officials in Manitoba are building a profile on blastomycosis, a rare but potentially deadly illness that recently became a reportable disease in the province.

Blastomycosis, which is caused by a fungus in the soil, has been showing up in southeastern Manitoba and northwestern Ontario for several years. The illness can be fatal if not treated.

'If they know they are going to be digging around in the dirt in northwestern Ontario or wooded areas, wearing masks may be of benefit.'—Dr. Greg Hammond

Since Manitoba declared in September 2006 doctors need to notify public health authorities when they diagnose a case of blastomycosis, officials say 14 cases have been diagnosed in men, women and children.

While the number of reported cases isn't high, it is significant, says Dr.
