Music videos' new age

And you almost have to be 21 or older to remember the days of music videos on television. The lack of music videos on cable's Music Television has become a joke, so much so that 14-year-olds miss the point. For them, the M in MTV stands for something else.

Call it Me TV - or even Myopia Television, specializing in the pseudo-reality of shows such as "Real World: Denver," "The Hills" and "Bam's Unholy Union." Music videos are the bright snippets that play in small windows during the credits to "Laguna Beach" - a far cry from the heyday of primetime music-video programming.

At first, the death of videos on television was something fans mourned in the '90s - a loss for followers of the still-new visual art form. Directors such as Spike Jonze and Michel Gondry were just emerging as the music video's stars, but suddenly their vision was being hacked and shortened and eventually made extinct - on television, at least.

Talk Back: The Kyle Lograsso story

As I was making pancakes for my two and half year old son and flipping through the pages of Golf Digest I happened upon the story of Kyle Lograsso. I showed the picture of Kyle swinging the golf club to my son, who immediately stopped eating and wanted the magazine in his own hands (syrup and all). As we turned the pages, my son noticed the picture of Kyle with his eye bandaged and with deep concern asked what was wrong. I told him that Kyle had a boo-boo but was doing great. I then asked him if he too would like to play golf like Kyle. He nodded, yet continued to stare at the pictures with great fascination.

As a father of three young children, I cannot imagine what this family has gone through. My father was recently diagnosed with a GBM brain tumor and has now gone through surgery/radiation/chemo and is now on to experimental treatments.

A closer look at the Tribe roster

On balance, the starting pitchers might be the best in the league. Granted, former Cy Young Award winners Johan Santana and Roy Halladay pitch for other teams, but this might be the year that C.C. Sabathia emerges as a genuine staff ace.

Moreover, where is the weakness? Jake Westbrook, Cliff Lee and Jeremy Sowers have raised consistency to an art form. Yes, Paul Byrd might not turn his confounding 2006 season around, but there are two mouth-watering options waiting at Triple-A: Fausto Carmona, who will fill in until Lee returns from the disabled list, and Adam Miller, who might be the most talented starter on the Cleveland horizon in years.

BULLPEN

General Manager Mark Shapiro and manager Eric Wedge could hire an astrologist to get a read on whether the relievers are more likely to put out fires or start them.

Friday Night Fury: Smackdown 20.04.07

1. Mark Bright and to a lesser extent Gavin Peacock. What was with the B Team on Match of the Day last week? The utterly clueless duo rambled incoherently between match highlights to the point where I muted the TV. Although that was after Ray Stubbs got in a sweet burn on Bright for stumbling all over himself, his words and his point. The latter of which never showed up. Alan Hansen, Mark Lawrenson and Alan Shearer; no problem. These guys; give me a break. Because it's a week ago I don't remember specifics that annoyed me just that they did. I remember shouting "bullshit" at Gavin Peacock at least once. Usually football gets me quite worked up but I like pundits with a sense of competence. It may then get exposed as they continue to talk but appearing competent to begin with helps a great deal.
