| Hope of a child
It is 7:45 a.m. in February, and most mothers of first-graders are bustling their children into the car, driving them to school on their way to work. Tammy Raulerson's morning is different. She is up early, at her computer, quietly answering the hundreds of e-mails that flood her inbox every day and trying to catch up on the laundry and house cleaning that seems to pile up despite her best efforts. As Tammy tiptoes around the house, her 7-year-old daughter Tacey lies resting in her bedroom and will not be going to school today. She is getting as much sleep as she can to strengthen her body. Tacey was born with retinoblastoma, a rare form of cancer that affects the eyes. Her right eye was removed when she was 9 months old, and last August - just a few days after starting first grade - Tacey underwent surgery to remove her left eye.
Lasik Or Contact Lenses?
Nearly half of all men and women use some type of vision correction... be it glasses, contacts, or corrective surgery. But which is best option? These women have 20-20 vision, but they achieved it in different ways. Claire Anselmo traded in her glasses 6 years ago and became one of more than 30 million Americans who wear contact lenses. Claire says, "They were easy to use, and not as high maintenance as I originally thought they were." Jacquelyn Walent wore contacts until she developed a fungus, and went back to glasses. But they were a burden, so last year she was one of the 1.4 million Americans who underwent corrective eye surgery. Jacquelyn says, "I saw perfectly like the next day I came in and I actually had better than perfect vision." But what about safety? A recent study compared the safety of contact lenses with vision correction surgery.
With a Moo, HLL moves into what was once nearly a Waterloo
MUMBAI: Using bovinespeak, Hindustan Lever Ltd (HLL) hopes to scoop a larger portion of the ice-cream market from Wednesday. A decade ago, HLL got clipped when Amul entered the arena, emphasising milk-based offerings, while its own Kwality range was made from vegetable oil. Things havent gone right ever since for the then market leader with more than 30% spoils. According to Amul sources, HLL today has just 9% of the ice-cream market, compared to a whopping 37% for Amul. HLL arm Kwality Walls will launch the brand, Moo, on Wednesday, underscoring the FMCG majors stated thrust on the foods business. Currently, processed foods constitute 3% of the companys topline, and ice-creams 1%. The businesses grew at 22.7% and 39.7%, respectively, in 2006 and are two of its fastest-growing segments.
Britney Goes Valley Girl: 'You're Smart, I'm Stupid'
LOS ANGELES (April 16, 2007) -- It was a wild weekend for Britney Spears, as the pop princess faced her usual pack of paparazzi and delivered a bizarre message to her fans. As she was chased by photographers, Britney broke out look, after look, after look, over the weekend before suddenly deciding to bring almost 4 weeks of post-rehab silence to a screeching halt. And cue the Valley Girl impersonation "I just want to say that um, I'm just really, really shocked at like how nice our world is because it's just so nice. Like oh my God! Like, the other day, like I was sitting there and I saw these magazines and they said I was pregnant, and like, it's so true. Like America, believe everything you read. Because, like, you're smart and I'm stupid. Like for real.
